Tutankhamun fever takes the Isle of Man by storm 11 December 2007

Tutankhamun fever has hit the Isle of Man following the launch of the world’s first Pyramid coin last Thursday.

The coin was produced to mark the most anticipated cultural event in 30 years: the return of Tutankhamun’s glorious treasures to London’s O2’s ‘Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs’ exhibition and Pobjoy Mint produced and launched the coin on behalf of the Isle of Man Government last week.

This spectacular coin forms part of a series which depicts the most wondrous artefacts unearthed in the young pharaoh’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings by English archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922 and reveals the spectacular canopic coffinette of Tutankhamun which contained the boy king’s mummified internal organs.

But no-one could have anticipated the huge demand for the Pyramid coin and the Philatelic Bureau of Isle of Man Post Office, which is responsible for marketing the coin, is working hard to cope with the significant amount of orders coming in from customers all around the globe.

Dot Tilbury, Manager of the Philatelic Bureau, Isle of Man Post Office said: “We are coping with more than the usual Christmas rush as the Tutankhamun coin has gripped the Isle of Man’s imagination. Enquiries are coming in from the world’s media who want to know more information about this world first.”
She added: “I would advise anyone who wants to buy the Pyramid coin to do so as soon as possible as demand is currently out-stripping supply. The coin, priced at £15, is available to buy at Regent Street and Ramsey Post Offices, from the Philatelic Bureau on (01624) 698430 or online”
