Changes to Vehicle Licensing Services 13 December 2007

The Department of Transport is developing a new vehicle registration and licensing database which is scheduled to go ‘live’ in May 2008. The new system will be fully integrated with the Post Office system and data from the tills will be automatically uploaded into the database, removing the need for laborious manual data entry. The system will also automatically print the licence discs – which are currently handwritten. The new system is designed to allow the future development of on-line web-based services to provide enhanced public access.

The Department’s agents, Onchan Commissioners and the Manx Fish Producers Organisation in Peel, have provided vehicle licensing services for many years, for which the Department is grateful but regrettably it will not be possible for the new system to be extended to them and therefore they will cease to provide this service at the end of December.

From 1st January 2008, vehicle licences can still be obtained at Post Offices and Tarlton Hodgson, t/a R C Teare’s Insurance Agents who will temporarily continue to issue vehicle licences at their Ramsey Office until the new system goes live. The Department is confident that its partnership with the Post Office, combined with the benefits of new IT systems, will continue to provide an enhanced, efficient and secure service with the scope for future improvements in service delivery.

The Department would like to thank Onchan Commissioners, the Manx Fish Producers and R C Teare’s for the years of service and support given to the Department in respect of vehicle licensing.
