New Deputy Fire Chief is appointed 14 December 2007

THE Department of Home Affairs is pleased to announce the appointment of Kevin Groom as Deputy Chief Fire Officer.

Kevin Groom appointed Deputy Fire ChiefMr Groom, 46, of Douglas, will take up the post on Monday (December 17). He succeeds Bruce Kirkham who retired earlier this year after 24 years with the fire service.

Mr Groom joined the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service in 1982 as a member of Blue Watch. He was promoted to Leading Firefighter in 1991, Sub Officer in 1993, going on to become a Station Officer in 1998. He has been Divisional Officer, Head of the Island’s Fire and Community Safety Teams, since 2004.

George Waft MLC, Home Affairs Member with political responsibility for the Fire Service congratulated Mr Groom on his promotion. He said:

‘It’s encouraging to have someone on the staff that is able to progress through the ranks and achieve their ambitions. It’s a key role in terms of leading the Fire Service and I wish him every success.’

Mr Groom will support Chief Fire Officer Brian Draper. His responsibilities will include supervision of the IoMFRS financial management, discipline, heath and safety and human resource policy together with procurement of fire appliances, uniform and equipment.

Mr Draper said:

‘I am delighted that the enthusiasm, determination and sheer hard work consistently displayed over many years has paid off. Kevin is an extremely capable, experienced and well respected officer and I very much look forward to continuing the ongoing development of the Fire and Rescue Service with the valuable assistance of his strong leadership and commitment to excellence.’

Mr Groom commented:

‘I am honoured and pleased to become the Deputy Chief Fire Officer. My experience across all aspects of the Fire Service combined with my commitment and dedication will contribute to its future development. There will be many challenges ahead; however I am certain that my personal contribution will promote the effective and efficient delivery of the Service to the community of the Island.’
