DHSS makes progress with the new Patient Administration System 7 January 2008

The Department of Health and Social Security has today made it clear that whilst there have been problems surrounding the introduction of the new Patient Administration System at Noble’s Hospital (November 5th 2007), every effort is being made to overcome the difficulties.

Hon W E Teare MHK, Minister for Health and Social Security said,

“In launching the improved Patient Administration System, some problems, particularly with regards to staff training, arose. The Department is working hard to resolve these issues. There is continuing dialogue between management at Noble’s Hospital, staff and their representatives to resolve the difficulties faced since the introduction of the new system. I have visited the Hospital on three separate occasions and have spoken to the staff who are using the system, which has given me a good understanding of the successes and also those areas where we need to focus our attention.”

Minister Teare continued,

“Secretaries have received additional training on the new system and are successfully managing the backlog. There has been improvement in the movement of health records around the hospital, which is helping to make better use of time. The system is functioning satisfactorily and the Department continues to work closely with the system providers. However we do need to revisit working practices and I have arranged for a full independent review of the demands being made upon our staff, which will commence within the next three weeks.”

Minister Teare added,

“I am hopeful that the actions taken by management at Noble’s Hospital will result in further improvements in the coming weeks, but I would stress that at no point has patient safety been jeopardised.”
