Oportunities for all at Careers 2008 10 January 2008

EMPLOYERS are lining up to offer fantastic opportunities to the public at Careers 2008 at the Villa Marina on Thursday, February 7.

With 50 employers and education institutions exhibiting, this year’s convention will go down as the biggest yet and an opportunity not to be missed by anyone looking to start a new career.

The Department of Education has teamed up with the Department of Trade and Industry to provide a more structured and dynamic annual event.

Jo Overty, the Department of Education’s Media and Events Co-ordinator, explained:

‘The DTI has five Sector Skills groups: ICT, Finance, Construction, Engineering and Retail and Hospitality. Grouping exhibitors from individual sectors together will allow visitors to the event to go straight to the employers they wish to speak with and spend time with them, gaining advice on how to enter those professions.’

The DTI will have its own stand and will be providing insight into what goes on within the sectors.

Adrian Harrison, champion of the engineering skill sector, explained:

‘For the first time, we are attending the event as a sector so people can see the breadth of what engineering and manufacturing means on the Island and the opportunities it presents. ‘We are also providing an hourly presentation in the Cinema called “Engineering the Future”, which gives an insight into what products we design and manufacture here and where they are used in the world.’ He continued: ‘For our young people, in particular, who are deciding on a career path, or choosing A levels or degrees, this is an ideal opportunity to discuss their thoughts with people who can help and who have been in the same situation in the past.’

Other professions represented at Careers 2008 include the armed forces, law, media, the voluntary sector and a variety of Manx Government departments, including Personnel, Health, Home Affairs, Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and Local Government and the Environment.

The Department of Education’s Careers Advisers will have their own stand and experienced educationalists will be on hand to talk about how to enter the teaching profession.

Nearly 1,000 students from all five secondary schools, as well as students from the Isle of Man College, will be attending the event to learn about the opportunities available to them.

Douglas-based employment agency Hamblin, one of the exhibitors, is offering anyone in full-time education the chance to win an iPod Nano and a cash sum for their school/College in a competition in which they describe their dream job. Entries must be handed in to the Hamblin stand on the day.

Education Minister Anne Craine MHK said of Careers 2008:

‘This event is a very important part of the school year. The Department is dedicated to providing young people with the very best of education in order to secure the best opportunities for them later in life. Careers 2008 gives our students the opportunity to look for a career they will both excel in and enjoy. This year, I am pleased that we are working with the Department of Trade and Industry to ensure we provide young people with a diverse range of jobs across their various skill sectors.’

Trade and Industry Minister David Cretney MHK said:

‘I am very pleased that the Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of Education are jointly hosting this careers convention. It is an excellent example of the Sector Skills Groups in action making links between employers, education providers and those seeking employment opportunities now and in the future. It is a great opportunity for the people of the Isle of Man to meet local employers face to face and discuss careers opportunities.’

The event is open from 9am-7.30pm on Thursday, February 7 at the Villa Marina, Douglas. Admission is free.
