Management of Communicable Diseases in Schools, Nurseries, Workplaces and Day Centres 10 January 2008

The Department of Health and Social Security is launching a document entitled ‘Management of Communicable Diseases in Schools, Nurseries, Workplaces and Day Centres.’ The document provides specific advice on how to deal with Communicable Diseases in child orientated environments.

Hon W E Teare MHK, Minster of Health and Social Security said,

“I recommend this document to all teachers, childminders, parents, carers, employers and everybody who has involvement with children in their daily lives. Preventing the transmission of infection is everybody’s responsibility and I hope that this document will assist in achieving this.”

Dr Parameswaran Kishore, Director of Public Health, said,

“There is often some degree of confusion amongst parents and teachers when a child develops a communicable disease – whether the child should be excluded, if so, for how long etc., advice often differs, which adds to the confusion. The document is based on a review of research evidence and will help prevent transmission of infection in such settings.”

This is the second edition of the Management of Communicable Diseases in Schools, Nurseries, Workplaces and Day Centres document, the first edition was produced in 2003 and has been revised, taking into account the comments suggestions from those who have used the document previously.
