‘Manx Bird Atlas – The First Ten Years and Beyond’ 4 February 2008

Manx National Heritage is delighted to host a lecture by Chris Sharpe, editor of the Manx Bird Atlas, as a part of its continuing Winter Lecture Programme. The lecture will take place at the Manx Museum Lecture Theatre on Friday 15th February, at 7.30pm. Chris Sharpe with a Black Chested Snake Eagle

The Manx Bird Atlas project was established to undertake the first comprehensive survey of all bird species to be found on the Island of Man during both the breeding season and in the winter. The survey, which ran from 1998 to 2003, was the most detailed of its kind ever undertaken in Europe. During its five-year programme of work, professional ornithologists surveyed the entire Island using new and innovative survey techniques.

Such methods have generated data that provides distribution and abundance information for 150 species which is now available to all, in the publication of a unique Atlas which was officially launched at the Manx Museum last year.

Chris Sharp commented:

“The talk will detail the work of the charity, during its five year survey of the Island’s bird life. I will set out the ‘why’ and the ‘how’ of the research and then use examples of the results obtained to underline their importance in the conservation of our local birdlife. Discussion will then move to the present position of the charity and our future work.”

The lecture will start at 7.30pm on Friday 15th February 2008 and will be held at the Manx Museum Lecture Theatre. Doors open at 7pm and admission is free of charge.

The Manx Museum is part of the award-winning Story of Mann and is open Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 5pm.
