Police Advisory Group members appointed 12 February 2008

COMMUNITY representatives have been appointed to the Police Advisory Group.

This is the statutory body established under the Police Act 1993 that keeps a watching brief on the police and monitors the constabulary’s performance against the Policing Plan.

The Group can be directed to undertake functions by the Home Affairs Minister but can also provide advice and recommendations in relation to the formulation of the Policing Plan.

Police Advisory Group Feb08Chaired by DHA Member George Waft MLC, political members on the Group are Tim Crookall MHK (west), Steve Rodan SHK (north) and Graham Cregeen MHK (south). Community members are Glenda Corkish, Paula Gelling, Luigi Gianquitto, David Stacey and David Talbot. Bob Jeavons, chairman of the Police Consultative Forum, Chief Constable Mike Langdon, officers from the Department, and a representative from the Police Federation can also attend.

The Police Advisory Group will meet every two months under the chairmanship of Mr Waft.

He commented:

‘We are looking forward to our next meeting in March when we will establish the Police Advisory Group’s future activities. We also look forward to the Chief Constable giving a presentation on current policing strategy at that meeting.
‘Our aim is to provide a strategic review of policing on the Island and to feed those views back to the Department of Home Affairs. If we feel there’s a need for public research we can also task the Police Consultative Forum to seek the public views for us on a particular subject.’

The Police Advisory Group can be contacted via email on

The Group’s work complements that of the Police Consultative Forum, which it can instruct to seek public views on any issues concerned with policing that may arise. While the Police Advisory Group works in an advisory capacity between the Department and the police, the PCF actively seeks to improve police and community relations by obtaining public views on all aspects of policing. The PCF can be contacted at or by phone on 694343.

Please note that neither group is responsible for formal complaints against the police which fall under the responsibility of the Police Complaints Commissioner.
