Angler Fined For Illegal Fishing 12 February 2008

In the High Bailiff’s Court on 29th January 2008, Mr K Edwards of 19 Port-e-Chee Avenue, Douglas pleaded guilty to the offence of using worms to catch fish in West Baldwin reservoir on 27th September 2007. He was fined a total of £125 and £110 costs.

Mr Edwards was also disqualified from holding any type of fishing licence on the Island for a period of 12 months, and his fishing tackle was confiscated by the court.

Mr Graham Cregeen, MHK today said, “This is an excellent result for the Department and gets the message across to anglers that it is not in their interest to chance illegal fishing activities in rivers and reservoirs. This clearly demonstrates that the Department will not tolerate any illegal fishing taking place day or night”.

The fishing season opens on the reservoirs on 10th March 2008 and anglers are reminded that they must be in possession of a valid licence before they go fishing. It is the responsibility of anglers to ensure they are fully aware of all the Regulations relating to angling. Copies of all the legislation can be downloaded from the DAFF website www.gov.im/daff or by ringing the Fisheries Division on 685857.
