New Concessionary Licences For Anglers 11 February 2008

Following approval in Tynwald, the Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry has announced the new fishing licence duties for the forthcoming river and reservoir fishing seasons.

For the first time, concessionary reservoir season licences will be available for senior citizens (65 years and over) and disabled anglers (see note below) with a daily bag limit of two fish. Also, the very successful initiative of allowing free fishing for children aged under 14 years will be continued. This initiative was first introduced in 2006 to encourage the younger generation to try fishing as a hobby, and since then the number of children fishing on a free licence has tripled. Free fishing initiative

During 2007 the Department carried out an angler customer survey, asking for views and comments on the range and quality of fishing available on the Island. One of the most common suggestions was for concessionary licences for OAPs and disabled.

Mr Graham Cregeen, MHK, member with responsibility for Fisheries said: ‘I am very pleased to announce the new duties for 2008, which both takes account of angler views and the need to more effectively reflect the fantastic value for money offered through fishing opportunities on the Island.’

In recent years the Department has become aware of a small minority of anglers taking a disproportionately large number of fish which they then sell on locally, to subsidise their hobby. The new fishing Regulations for 2008 also include a ban on the sale of all rod caught fish from rivers and reservoirs, which will prevent this happening, and also assist in the preservation of native stocks of salmon and trout.

Full details of the new licences are detailed in the table below:-
