A bumper week of Island-wide events lined up for TT 19 February 2008

The Department of Tourism and Leisure is pleased to announce an exciting agenda of events lined up for the TT Festival.

Race week will see a number of high profile events taking place on Loch promenade in Douglas, with stunts, displays and big screen entertainment from 30th May until 6th June. The spectacular TT fireworks display will this year be launched from Douglas Bay at 11pm on Wednesday 4th June.

The popular ‘Beach Race’ on Douglas beach, run by the Peveril Motorcycle Club, sees all comers taking on the challenge of racing moto-cross and Enduro bikes across the sand. This will take place this year on Thursday 5th June.

The Island will also host a major exhibition of TT history from the Getty Images Gallery archive. Shots from over 100 years of racing will be on display on the Island throughout the TT fortnight. The exhibition includes pictures from the first TT for motorcars in 1904 as well as pictures from the centenary of motorcycling racing on the Island last year. Pictures of legends such as Stanley Woods and Bob McIntyre sit alongside modern heroes like current lap record holder John McGuinness, David Jefferies and Steve Hislop. Manx photographer Dave Collister’s work also features in the exhibition.

The RAF Falcons Parachute Team replace the Red Arrows who regrettably this year have a prior commitment in the USA and Canada. Their beach display will take place on Sunday 1st June in Douglas.

There will also be a Battle of Britain Memorial flight on Friday 6th June. The popular Blades Acrobatic Display team will be performing in Ramsey and Douglas on Tuesday 3rd June. Other air displays will, hopefully, be announced shortly adding more thrills to this year’s entertainment.

The Moddey Dhoo Motor Cycle Club will again be running their popular meeting on Laxey Promenade on 5th June. Last year an estimated 6,000 people came down to the ‘free to enter’ bike show with displays by individual clubs, both local and visiting.

This year the ‘Road Safety Unit’ and Manx Motorsport Medical Services will be on hand to give out advice and information, while the Vintage Motorcycle Club have organised their day’s run to arrive at the show between 12.30 and 1.00pm and they will spend the rest of the afternoon at the event. There will also be a sidecar trial on the rocks at low tide and live music.

Ramsey will again host the popular sprint and other events are planned across the Island.

Tourism and Leisure Minister Adrian Earnshaw said:

‘The TT is our biggest event of the year and we are looking forward to an exciting action-packed programme. The team at the Department of Tourism and Leisure are getting into the spirit already and working hard to put together what promises to be a Festival to remember.’
