-Media Statement - 19 February 2008

The Department of Health and Social Security has announced that at 7:20 this morning (Tuesday, 19th February 2008) a circuit breaker failed, which cut the incoming mains electrical supply to Noble’s Hospital.

The standby generator activated normally, but a further circuit breaker appears to have malfunctioned and the electrical supply from the standby generator did not get through to the hospital. However, critical areas within the hospital were supported by the emergency battery supply.

At 9:07 a.m. power was restored to the Intensive Therapy Unit, although there were no patients in the unit at this time. At 9:15 a.m. full power throughout the hospital was restored, via the standby generator. As a further backup procedure, additional generators had been sourced.

The Department of Health and Social Security stresses that at no time was patient safety compromised. Theatre activity at the hospital is continuing.

The Minister has today instructed that an independent investigation will be conducted which will report directly to him.
