London 2012's Pre-Games Training Camp Guide 10 March 2008

The Department of Tourism and Leisure are pleased to announce the National Sports Centre, together with other sports facilities on the Island, has been included within London 2012’s Pre-Games Training Camp Guide. Notification of this arrived this week following a comprehensive application process which has been undertaken over the past twelve months. The approval is for Road Cycling, Mountain Biking, Handball and Shooting.

The facility requirements for the training camps are onerous and these sports were the only ones that met the standards required by the London Organising Committee. Unfortunately some of the Island’s more popular indoor sports, such as Badminton and Table Tennis, could not be accommodated at the NSC as these sports will not be played on wooden floors at the Olympics.

The next stage of the process is for the Department to provide further details, including photographs of the facilities, to the Organising Committee who will be developing the Guide in partnership with VisitBritain. The guide will then be presented to the National Olympic Committees at a series of international events during the Beijing Olympics later this year.

Although there are limitations on the additional marketing the Isle of Man can undertake we will obviously be able to utilise the links we will be forging with the Commonwealth Games nations through our hosting of the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2011 as many of the seventy one Commonwealth Games Federation members also compete at the Olympics.

The Department in pursuing the facilitation of these world class sporting events on the Island take into account not only the sporting benefits but also the many economic benefits of the Isle of Man being showcased throughout the world.
