All Island Ashtray Amnesty and Smokefree Story Competition 13 March 2008

No Smoking Day 08

Wednesday 12th March is National No Smoking Day and there are now just over 2 weeks until the Isle of Man goes Smokefree. To commemorate this historical time, Public Health is organizing an “All Island Ashtray Amnesty” between the 12th and 30th March, where individuals or businesses can leave their ashtrays behind as a symbol of becoming Smokefree.

Michelle Flanagan, Health Promotion Officer, said,

“The idea of the Ashtray Amnesty and handing in your clean ashtray is to symbolise support of the Island’s new smokefree atmosphere and also to motivate smokers who may want to quit. The ashtrays collected during the amnesty will be used by students from the Isle of Man College to make an artistic display for a photo shoot, once the Island has gone Smokefree.”

To join in the amnesty, clean ashtrays should be left in marked boxes, which will be available at entrances of all Shoprite stores, the Quit4You drop-in clinics, and some pharmacies around the Island. We will regularly update the official collection points on our website; www.smokefreemann.gov.im. Workplaces can also request a collection bin from Public Health on 642668, or email tobacco@gov.im between the 10th and 30th March.

In addition to the Ashtray Amnesty, Smokefree Mann would like to give you the opportunity to ‘Tell us your Smokefree Story’ for a chance to win £100 of Shoprite vouchers. If you have been affected by someone you know going smokefree, your workplace has changed, or maybe you have taken the plunge and quit smoking yourself, tell us your story in less than 200 words. Email your story with your contact details to tobacco@gov.im by 30th March 2008, and we’ll put every entry into a random draw. We will also publish some of the stories on the Smokefree Mann website.

A series of roadshows have also been organised for the countdown to the 30th March, to provide information about the legislation and the free Quit4You and Quit4Two stop smoking services. Members of the Smokefree Mann Team and Quit4You Advisors will be at various Shoprite Stores around the Island, providing information, advice and free giveaways. The roadshows will start on Wednesday 12th March – No Smoking Day, at the Chester Street Shoprite store between 12 and 2 pm. Further roadshows will be held between 1 & 3pm on the following dates: Saturday 15th March - Shoprite Douglas, Victoria Rd and Shoprite Castletown; Saturday 22nd March - Port Erin Shoprite & Ramsey Shoprite; and Saturday 29th March, Peel Shoprite, Douglas Chester Street Shoprite.

For more information about free services available to help people quit smoking, visit www.Quit4You.gov.im or telephone Public Health on 642693 for a leaflet. For queries about the legislation, visit www.Smokefreemann.gov.im or call Environmental Health on 685894.

Smokefree Mann is a combined partnership between the Public Health Directorate (Department of Health and Social Security), Environmental Health (The Department of Local Government and Environment), and various supporting organisations, including: Home Affairs, Douglas Corporation, Douglas Development Partnership and the Road Transport Licensing Committee.
