Proposal to Tynwald for improved learning and physical disability services 4 December 2007

The Department of Health and Social Security has announced a proposal to Tynwald to convert the premises of Cushag House, Port St Mary to a fully accessible accommodation for people with learning and physical disabilities.

Hon W E Teare MHK, Minister for Health and Social Security said,

“I am pleased to be presenting this proposal to Tynwald. The DHSS has a commitment to provide appropriate social care services for people with various disabilities and their families. The new facility at Cushag House will provide much improved facilities to meet the needs of adults with a learning and physical disability in the south of the Island.”

The former health care premises at Cushag House will provide accommodation for up to eight people with learning and physical difficulties, if the proposal to Tynwald is successful. The facility will also replace an existing nearby community home in Port Erin that is now not considered to meet required operational standards and no longer meets the needs of its residents. It is proposed the residents at the Port Erin home will move to Cushag House following refurbishment.
