First Registered Public Health Specialist for Isle of Man! 1 January 2008

Lesley Dorward has been accepted onto the UK Register for Public Health Specialists and is the first person from the Isle of Man to be registered.

The Register was established in 2003 to provide a regulatory framework for those individuals practising as specialists/consultants in public health, a level of practice equivalent to consultants in public health medicine. Registration is comparable to registration with the GMC Specialist Register for public health physicians or the GDC Specialist List in dental public health for dentists.

There are currently three routes to the Register –

Standard – through approved education and training programmes. The Board currently recognises two programmes (1) the Faculty of Public Health and (2) the Royal College of Surgeons training programme in dental public health.

Retrospective Portfolio Assessment - this route provides formal recognition of competencies for those already working at a senior level either as generalists or defined specialists, by submission of a detailed portfolio.

Dual Registration - the existing process whereby those who have been accepted onto the GMC and GDC Specialist Registers in public health are accepted without further assessment.

Lesley applied through the Retrospective Portfolio Assessment route and had to submit detailed evidence of knowledge and applied skills in all 10 key areas of Public Health and says:

"I was delighted to hear I had been accepted onto the Register. I actually submitted my portfolio for assessment in May 2006 but, due to the volume of submissions received just before the deadline (31 May 2006), it took the Register quite some time to process all of the portfolios. It was a lot of hard work, but worth it”.

There are currently 267 Specialists on the Register in the UK.
