The Department of Home Affairs and the Isle of Man Civil Service Commission are pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Alison Gomme as Governor of the Isle of Man Prison.

Mrs Gomme, currently governor of two prisons near Birmingham, will take up the post in the summer on 16 June 2008.

Home Affairs Minister Martyn Quayle MHK welcomed the appointment. He said:

‘In Mrs Gomme we have been fortunate to appoint someone who has gained a wealth of experience due to her many years’ employment in the Prison Service and we look forward to her leading the Isle of Man Prison Service at the start of a new era at Jurby.’

Originally from Hornsea, East Yorkshire, Mrs Gomme obtained an honours degree in psychology from Sheffield University in 1980 before joining the Prison Service of England and Wales .During her career, she has served in a number of establishments in a variety of posts and in Headquarters on policy and project work as well as the prison service training college. She took a year’s sabbatical in 1990 as a Harkness Fellow based in Washington DC, which enabled her to visit and study federal and county jails across the United States of America.

Mrs Gomme has governed four establishments.

  • Erlestoke Prison 1993 – 1995,
  • Chelmsford Prison 1996 -2000, and
  • Hewell Grange and Brockhill Prisons, near Redditch, from 2004 to date.

Hewell Grange is a 187-capacity open prison and Brockhill, formerly a women’s prison, was re-roled under her leadership in July 2006 to become an adult male, Category C training prison for 170 men.

Mrs Gomme said:

‘I am very sincerely looking forward to the next stage of my career on the Isle of Man. What really interests me about this new position is the opportunity to work with other agencies. I am keen on working in partnership with others to develop systems and arrangements to make communities safer. I think there is great scope to develop that on the Isle of Man. I am moving to the Island with my husband Francis and daughter Stephanie (age 10) and we are all excited about becoming part of the community.’
