Chief Minister Creates TT Working Group 26 March 2008

CHIEF Minister Tony Brown MHK has launched a top-level Government working group to ensure that there are clear lines of responsibility and communication in relation to the TT Races and public safety issues during the event.

The group, which held its first meeting today (Wednesday March 26, 2008), is headed by the Chief Minister and includes the Ministers and Chief Executives of the three relevant departments – Tourism and Leisure, Transport and Home Affairs. At the same time the Chief Minister has confirmed that the Department of Tourism and Leisure is the department responsible for the TT Races.

The creation of the working group follows the report of Coroner Michael Moyle on his inquest into the deaths of two spectators and one competitor in an incident at the 26th milestone during last year’s TT Races.

The Chief Minister explained:

‘The Coroner’s inquiry into this tragedy has raised a number of issues which have to be taken very seriously, notwithstanding the fact that some changes have already been made.
‘Given the importance of public safety, and the importance of the TT Races, it is essential that Government addresses these matters in a co-ordinated way to make sure that we have the right structures, training and precautions in place for the future.’

Mr Brown continued:

‘The working group will ensure that these issues are examined to see what further improvements need to be made in the interests of the good management of the TT.’

He concluded:

‘The TT is supported by many members of the community acting in voluntary roles, and that support is much appreciated. I am confident that Government and the race organisations can work together to make any necessary changes and secure the future of the TT Races.’
