‘Assignment Antarctica’ by Rick Tomlinson 10 April 2008

One of the stunning images ExhibitionManx National Heritage is currently preparing for their launch of the latest temporary exhibition at the Manx Museum, entitled ‘Assignment Antarctica’ by internationally renowned photographer Rick Tomlinson.

The exhibition opens to the public on Saturday 12th April 2008 in the Temporary Exhibition Gallery and contains a wide selection of breathtaking photographic imagery, shot on Rick’s most recent expedition onboard the super yacht Adele. From the spectacular coastal landscapes of Antarctica to its charming inhabitants, the images give us an insight to the world of Antarctic exploration by yacht.

Nicola Tooms, Assistant Curator for Manx National Heritage said:

“Rick’s last exhibition at the Manx Museum, featuring his earlier yachting photographs, was extremely successful and received wonderful feedback from our visitors. So we are really excited to have this opportunity to display more of his spectacular images, and already the exhibition is creating a lot of interest even before it has opened!”

Rick has long been involved in boat building and sailing, spending much of his early years on the water around the Isle of Man racing dinghies and dreaming of one day competing in the Whitbread Race. In 1985 this ambition became a reality when he raced in the Whitbread Round the World Race as part of the crew of rock star Simon Le Bon’s Yacht, Drum. It was during this voyage when it was suggested somebody should photograph the journey. Rick volunteered and armed with a Nikon camera and twenty rolls of film he set off on the race. Rick’s photographs were a huge success and his career as a yachting photographer became firmly established.

Rick’s latest work ‘Assignment Antarctica’ will be on display at the Manx Museum from Saturday 12th April to Saturday 14th June 2008 and admission is completely free of charge.
