DHSS seek approval for 14 bed Mental Health Facility 11 April 2008

At this months sitting of Tynwald, Hon W E Teare MHK, Minister for Health and Social Security, will be seeking approval for the construction of a 14 bedded in-patient Mental Health Rehabilitation facility, located within the Ballamona Estate.

The Minister said,

“The approach to treating people with mental health needs has undergone significant development over recent years and it is essential that the current service infrastructure positively reflects such change. It has been recognised that the nature of the current facility does not facilitate best practice. It is acknowledged that optimised standards of care, enhancement of service user choice and emphasis on ‘value for money’, will best be served by the new building.”

The Minister added,

“The current facility at 6-16 Tynwald Terrace does not have the capacity to provide appropriate areas to conduct essential therapies and interventions which would promote recovery; nor can it provide essential privacy for service users and family members.

The Minister continued,

“The new facility will enable the Mental Health Rehabilitation Service to provide a much improved standard of care to the population of the Isle Of Man and reduce the need for patients to be moved off island for treatment.”

The new facility will provide 14 en-suite bedrooms, therapy rooms, interview rooms, a visitors’ room and will have an enhanced security layout in order to promote and ensure the safety of both service users and staff. The facility will comply with modern day standards required to provide a high calibre of mental health rehabilitation / treatment. By addressing previous clinical and functional deficits, the new facility will provide an option to enable some service users who are currently placed off Island to be returned and offered a high standard of service locally.
