DHSS announces developments in Social Services for Older People 11 April 2008

The Department of Health and Social Security has today announced plans to focus its service provision for older people on community based options.

Andrew Swithinbank, Director of Social Services, said

“The Department will start to transfer resources, whenever possible, into non residential services such as Home Care, while using our current assets to best advantage. This will increase the care and support choices and options available for older people.”

Mr. Swithinbank continued,

“The four Resource Centres for Older People will be living up to their name in increasing the range of day time services for older people living in their own homes in the locality, as well as providing residential respite care. The recently launched Hospital to Home scheme, which has been part of this new focus, has been greatly successful.”

Mr. Swithinbank added,

“Another example of this focus is that Resource Centres will soon be offering a Good Neighbour Service in their areas. This service allows older people in the community the opportunity to attend sessions during the day and enjoy the company of their peers. The relevant literature for this is currently being prepared for an imminent start for this service. This type of service can help more people without requiring significant extra resources.”

Dudley Butt MLC, Political Member for Social Services said

“The expectations of older people requiring care and support are rising, and we can no longer continue to expand services in only what are now considered traditional ways. The Department is committed to providing people with more choices and variety in meeting their care needs.”

The Department will ensure that consultation and discussion continues to takes place in the development and evolution of services that best meet the needs of older people in the Isle of Man and helps improve their quality of life.
