Herbs, Habits and Horticulture 24 April 2008

Two young Visitors to Rushen Abbey get into character! On Sunday 4th May 2008, Manx National Heritage will host an event for the whole family entitled Herbs, Habits and Horticulture at Rushen Abbey in Ballasalla.

The event begins at 10am and will take place all around the medieval site, including Rushen Abbey’s beautiful gardens and areas of excavation. There will be activities for all the family to enjoy centred on medieval monastic life at the Abbey, including demonstrations of herbal remedies, medieval toothpaste and willow weaving.

Visitors are invited to join in the fun by making pomanders and tussie mussies, little bouquets of herbs and flowers which medieval ladies would have carried around with them to ward off unpleasant smells. Visitors are welcome to take their creations home with them.

There will also be a family quiz to complete on your journey around the abbey, as well as a strawberry hunt and colouring activities for younger children.

Kate Hawkins, Curator of Natural History for Manx National Heritage said:

Whether it’s a fun family day out or a relaxing Sunday for a busy couple there really is something for everyone. Volunteers from the Friends of Manx National Heritage will be on hand to sell light refreshments and there will also be guided tours of the herb beds and the archaeological areas of the site. If you’re in the mood for something different, come along and join us.”

Herbs, Habits and Horticulture takes place at Rushen Abbey on Sunday 4 May from 10am to 4.30pm. For details of admissions charges, Rushen Abbey or the event itself, please visit
