Public viewing days at Jurby Prison 25 April 2008

Ministers and political members at Jurby prison openingANYBODY who has booked a place on one of the public viewing days at Jurby prison but cannot now attend is urged to inform staff by contacting 686157. Public tours of the new £41.7 million facility, which get under way this weekend, were oversubscribed within days of being advertised.

A number of people were subsequently placed on a reserve list and they will be invited to take the place of anybody who is unable to attend. Those who have booked to look round the new jail are asked to turn up at least 10 minutes early to allow time for security checks to be carried out.

All tours must start promptly at the designated times and groups cannot be held back to cater for any latecomers. Because of the large numbers of vehicles likely to be travelling to the Jurby prison drivers are advised to allow plenty of time for their journeys.

Visitors are also reminded that items such as cameras and mobile phones cannot be taken inside the prison and should be locked up securely and out of sight.

Directions to prison: The new prison is located in the north west corner of the former RAF airfield in Jurby West and can be accessed using the A10 Ballaugh Road. If travelling north from the Ballaugh direction, the prison entrance is on the right-hand side of the road approximately half a mile before the A14 crossroad.

To access the prison from Ramsey, the A13 Jurby Road should be followed to Sandygate before turning right on to the A14 Ballamenagh Road. Proceed to the end of the road where it joins the A10. Turn left on to the A10 and the prison entrance is approximately half a mile down the road, on the left-hand side.

If travelling from Douglas, the most direct route is to travel over the mountain using the A18 Mountain Road and turn left at the Bungalow on to the A14 Sulby Road. At Sulby proceed straight across and follow the road to Sandygate crossroad. Here you should go straight across and follow the road until it joins with the A10. The directions from there are as for Ramsey.
