Young swimmers take the plunge 9 May 2008

THE annual Dolphin Trophy Swimming Galas take place on Wednesday 21 May. Years 5 and 6 pupils from 31 schools will compete at the NSC, Douglas.

Director of Education John Cain has agreed to present the prizes at the end of the small and medium schools’ galas, to be held at 10am. In the afternoon, when the large schools compete at 1.30pm in two categories, Executive Officer Carole Tourle, who will be retiring this year, will carry out the honour.

Impressive silver trophies will be held by the four winning schools for a year and all the swimmers taking part in individual and relay races will receive certificates.

Last year Ballaugh Primary School won the small schools’ gala, Arbory Primary School the medium schools’ event, Buchan School the large schools (1) contest and Albert Road Junior School the large schools (2) event.

The event has become a traditional part of the school calendar.

In her foreword to the 2008 programme, Education Minister Anne Craine MHK says swimming is one of the things the Island does best and adds:

‘It is an important life skill and we never know when we may want to use it in the future. It may be for fun, through snorkelling or diving, or just to enjoy keeping fit. It is a skill that never leaves you and can keep you active in your old age.’
