Department member hands over minibus to school 9 May 2008

STUDENTS at Ramsey Grammar School and three northern primary schools are taking to the road in a new minibus provided by the Department of Education.

The 17-seater Iveco vehicle was purchased for £38,000 to replace the seven year old bus the school has been using.Minibus handover

The bus, which can accommodate up to six wheelchairs, will primarily be used to transport students with special educational needs to and from school daily and take them out on trips. It will also be used to carry pupils from Auldyn Infants’ School and Bride and Andreas Schools.

Department of Education Member Bill Henderson MHK handed over the keys of the brightly liveried bus to Steve Jones, Head of Flexible Learning Area 4 at Ramsey Grammar School, on Thursday.

Ramsey Grammar School Headteacher David Trace and Department of Education Transport Manager John Swindlehurst were also at the handover.

Students enjoyed their first trip out in the bus that afternoon and returned with big smiles, giving it a definite thumbs-up.

Mr Henderson said:

‘The bus is a wonderful asset to students with special educational needs at Ramsey Grammar School and to the wider Ramsey community. The fact students have use of the bus will improve their learning experience and give them the opportunity to go on visits they wouldn’t otherwise enjoy. I want to thank all the staff who helped to make this happen.’

Mr Jones said:

‘The bus will be in use daily, transporting pupils to a wide range of activities. It will allow all our pupils, whatever their disabilities, to access the hydrotherapy pool at Glencrutchery in Douglas, educational sites, other schools, the Isle of Man College and amenities around the Island.’
