New Director at the Communications Commission 9 June 2008

Dr Carmel McLaughlinThe Isle of Man Communications Commission is to have a new Director, Dr Carmel McLaughlin. This follows the retirement of Anthony Hewitt who has held the post since 2001. Dr McLaughlin is currently in a senior position at Ofcom, the UK Office of Communications. She will join the Commission on 10 July 2008.

The Communications Commission is a Statutory Board of Tynwald. It is responsible for regulating the Island’s telecoms and broadcasting industries. Dr McLaughlin brings a wealth of relevant experience to the role, having worked at a senior level not only with Ofcom, but also at ComReg, the Office of Communications Regulation, in Ireland. Prior to joining ComReg, she held a number of appointments at the UK’s Independent Television Commission and the Independent Broadcasting Authority.

Hon Martyn Quayle MHK, Chairman of the Commission, commented,

“We are delighted that Dr McLaughlin is joining us. She has over 20 years’ experience in communications regulation. This is a very dynamic sector and Dr McLaughlin’s background means that she will be able to steer a course which benefits the whole of the Island’s community.”

Dr McLaughlin, who was born in Scotland, was educated at Kylemore Abbey School, County Galway, at the University of Edinburgh and at Darwin College, Cambridge.

Dr McLaughlin said

“I am thrilled to be joining the Communications Commission at this exciting time, not least because of the Digital Switchover for the Island next year. I am looking forward to the challenges that this fast-moving industry presents for a small community with an international profile”.

The retiring Director, Anthony Hewitt, added

“I have greatly enjoyed my time at the Commission and I am leaving a strong, healthy and vibrant industry. Carmel McLaughlin’s appointment is great news for the Isle of Man. She is a first-class regulator and I wish her and the Commission well for the future growth and development of telecoms and broadcasting in the Island.”
