DHSS thanks Skandia staff for blood donation 12 June 2008

The Department of Health and Social Security today thanked Royal Skandia Life Assurance staff for a recent blood donation session, held at the Skandia Headquarters building on Onchan Head.

A blood donor session was identified by Skandia personnel as one idea in which staff could make a valuable contribution to the Island’s community.

As a result, the Isle of Man Blood Transfusion Service was invited to hold two blood donation sessions at Skandia, on Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st May. A total of 84 members of Skandia staff volunteered to donate blood and after screening, 56 of those were accepted. Tony McMaster, Noble’s Hospital Pathology Manager said,

"I would like to give a big thank you to Skandia’s Mrs Julia Gray who organised this much appreciated and valuable event. Without the help and positive support from Julia and all the staff at Skandia it would have been impossible to arrange these blood donations. The blood donations are a welcome addition to our blood stocks, especially at this time of year.”

Dr John Wardle, Director of the Isle of Man Blood Transfusion Service said,

“We are delighted to take this opportunity to collect blood from the staff at Skandia. As in the UK, donor numbers on the island are falling and holding donor sessions, such as this one at Skandia, is very helpful in increasing those numbers.”

Dr Wardle added,

“We have to meet a number of standards in order to hold donor sessions in the community, such as building size, access for donors, access for the blood donor van, refreshment areas etc, and therefore a large organisation such as Skandia is ideally placed to hold such donor sessions.”
