First Island-based Nursing Degree endorsed 10 June 2008

The Department of Health and Social Security is delighted to announce that the University of Chester, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the Health and Life Sciences Partnership (HLSP), have endorsed the provision of a BSc (Hons) Nursing (Adult and Mental Health) course to be available in the Island for the first time. There will also be the opportunity for Adult Branch nurses to obtain a second qualification BSc (Hons) in Nursing Mental Health.

Eddie Teare MHK, Minister for Health and Social Security said,

“This is a landmark achievement for nurse education in the Isle of Man. Having this degree course available locally for the first time can only assist in developing and improving the already high standard of nurse training on the Island.”

The Minister added,

“It is the Department’s duty to provide the best possible care to patients and clients in the Island and nurse training is vital aspect in achieving this goal.”

Dr Jacqueline Yates, Head of Learning (DHSS) said,

“This successful collaboration and the high standard of educational provision, both theoretical and clinical, have enabled this development to be realised. The University did not lay down any conditions on our running the programme or any recommendations for us to consider. This is extremely rare and a real testament to the quality of our provision and plans.”

The provision commences in September 2009 and replaces the RN Dip HE Nursing that is currently provided by the DHSS at the Keyll Darree Education & Training Centre, through a collaborative provision with the University of Chester.

Current Diploma courses will be completed with no effects to their current status.
