Chief Minister welcomes "Fairtrade Island" status 13 June 2008

CHIEF Minister Tony Brown MHK has welcomed the news that the Isle of Man is to be given ‘Fairtrade Island’ status in recognition of its support for Fairtrade products.

The award, to be formally presented on Tynwald Day, follows a campaign by the local Fairtrade Island Initiative endorsed by the Council of Ministers and Tynwald. Accreditation is only granted when there is evidence of a commitment to using and promoting Fairtrade products across the whole community.

Efforts to gain recognition by the Fairtrade Foundation were backed by a Tynwald resolution in February 2007 initiated by Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Minister Phil Gawne MHK with support from the Council of Ministers. This called on Government Departments to support Fairtrade products, and for Fairtrade tea and coffee to be made available at all Government and Tynwald meetings.

The Chief Minister commented:

‘The Isle of Man will wear the ‘Fairtrade Island’ badge with pride. It shows that this is a caring community playing its part in providing a fairer deal for disadvantaged producers in the developing world.’
