Aids and Adaptations 10 June 2008

Following the grant of additional funds for further waiting list initiatives from Tynwald, the Department of Health and Social Security are pleased to announce the commencement of the Aids and Adaptations Waiting List Initiative.

The Aids and Adaptations scheme allows for the provision of specialist equipment and, in some cases, alterations to the homes of people with disabilities, in order to allow them to have access to vital facilities and remain in their own homes for as long as possible.

Dudley Butt MLC, Member for Social Services said,

“We are committed to helping people remain in their own homes for as long as they are able and I am delighted that Tynwald has agreed to allow us to provide this much needed additional assistance.”

Andrew Swithinbank, Director of Social Services said,

“In recent times the demand for assistance has outstripped the budget available, which has resulted in a number of people awaiting assistance. With the approval of the waiting list initiative, we are now able to start to serve persons who have been awaiting support and hopefully, in the coming months, work will start on the top priority cases.”

Mr Swithinbank added,

“The Department has also been looking towards the future by liaising with colleagues across Government to review related provision and ensure that we are making the best use of available resources in bringing the eligibility criteria for the scheme up to date.”

This is another strand in Social Services approach in enabling people to remain independent for as long as they are able.
