Young Wizards Taught at Family Library 16 June 2008

AMAZING things were happening at the Department of Education's Family Library in Westmoreland Road, Douglas, on Saturday when Mike Clague, a member of the Magic Circle, held a magic workshop for children.

Would-be wizards learned lots of new skills, and were soon balancing cups upside down from the books on the shelves.

Mike, the Department of Education's Youth and Community Adviser, who is secretary of the Magicians of Mann, was very pleased with the youngsters' skills.Magic at Library

‘This is the third magic workshop organised by the Family Library this year,’ he said, ‘and it’s a great way to encourage children to visit the library, which has lots of books on magic and other hobbies. The Family Library is about much more than books, though, and this is just one of the many activities which encourages young people to enjoy and achieve.’

Librarian in Charge of the Family Library is Mary Cousins. She said:

‘The Family Library arranges all sorts of events and activities, and they are always very popular. This is the National Year of Reading, and all the libraries on the island have special events planned. Our next big event is a Summer Reading Scheme, being launched this Saturday, which is guaranteed to excite the members and their families as it has a very special theme this year.’

After the workshop, Philip Morrison and Michael and Richard Goddard, all from Douglas and members of the Young Magicians of Mann, entertained the children and other visitors to the library with a short magic show.
