Images of Today – Celebrating 70 Years of the Isle of Man Photographic Society 18 June 2008

‘Young Viking’ by Sue JonesManx National Heritage is currently in the final stages of preparing for its latest temporary exhibition, ‘Images of Today’. The exhibition is being staged in collaboration with the Isle of Man Photographic Society to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the society.

The exhibition will showcase members work whilst exploring the illustrious history of the society. Themes including people, landscapes, architecture and Manx scenes will be explored using a variety of photographic media and digital techniques.

Founded in 1938, the society has exhibited at the Manx Museum on two previous occasions: ‘Through the Lens’ (1992) and ‘Gems from the Lens’ (1998). In the intervening ten years there has been rapid technological development in the art of photography, allowing more people to embrace the subject and the society goes from strength to strength. The exhibition will include images which celebrate these new developments, with an emphasis upon digital photography.

Mr Chris Blyth, President of the Society said:

“In our 70th year we are grateful once again to Manx National Heritage for giving us the opportunity to display our work. We hope it will encourage new members to be involved in the creative and rewarding pastime of photography.”

Katie King, Assistant Curator for Manx National Heritage added:

“Visitors to the museum will be extremely impressed by the exceptional quality and professionalism of the photographs on display in the exhibition. The society takes great pride in their work and the sheer variety of images included will be sure to capture the imagination and inspire people to get their own cameras out!”

‘Images of Today’ – the Isle of Man Photographic Society’s 70th Anniversary Exhibition will open at the Manx Museum on Saturday 28th June until Saturday 30th August 2008. The Manx Museum is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm and admission is completely free of charge.
