Prison Governor looks forward to challenges ahead 26 June 2008

Isle of Man Prison Governor Alison GommeTHE Island’s new Prison Governor says she is excited about the challenges that lie ahead. Mrs Alison Gomme took up the post earlier this month having most recently served as the governor at two prisons near Birmingham – HMP Hewell Grange and Brockhill.

One of her biggest tasks will be to oversee the transfer of prison operations from Victoria Road in Douglas to Jurby. Mrs Gomme was full of praise for the Island’s new £41.7 million jail which was officially opened by Minister for Home Affairs Martyn Quayle MHK in April.

She said:

‘The new facility at Jurby will offer an opportunity to work more closely with prisoners to identify their needs and offending behaviour. This in turn should help to reduce crime further and improve community safety. We are currently focussing all of our attention and efforts on moving prisoners and staff in a safe and secure way to ensure a good, well-organised and successful transition to Jurby.’

Mrs Gomme, who has also worked at HM Prison Services in London, says she has been ‘bowled over by the beauty of the Isle of Man.’

Mr Quayle added:

‘This is a challenging and exciting period in the history of the Island’s prison service and we are fortunate to have somebody of Mrs Gomme’s calibre to lead us into that new era.’
