New Tourism Awards Launch 27 June 2008

The Department of Tourism and Leisure is pleased to announce the new categories of the Tourism Awards scheme for 2008.

Visitors and residents can nominate a tourism business, organisation or individual for a special award by telling the Department about their experience of outstanding quality or service.

There are 12 award categories, namely, accommodation of the year, best town/village, taxi driver of the year, best night out, best coastal experience, best cultural experience, area of most scenic natural beauty, best railway, attraction of the year, event of the year, restaurant of the year and best customer service. Nominations can be made online at or by completing nomination cards that are available from the Welcome Centre at the Sea Terminal.

Geoff Corkish, MBE, MHK and Political Member for the Department of Tourism and Leisure said:

‘The launch of the Tourism Awards is tied in closely with the Department’s strategic objective of driving up quality and service within the tourism and hospitality sectors. Our Awards aim to recognise and encourage our industry partners who are helping to bring about positive changes in the tourism industry acting as an inspiration to others. ’If anyone has been particularly impressed by an individual, company or project we want to hear from them.’

Nominations close on 31st October 2008 with the judging taking place shortly after that.
