Dance the afternoon away at Rushen Abbey 27 June 2008

Now and then: Dancers at Rushen Abbey.By popular demand, The Friends of Manx National Heritage (FMNH) will again be reviving Tea Dancing at Rushen Abbey by hosting their second ‘Strawberries & Cream Tea Dance’. Kindly sponsored by Athertons Chartered Surveyors and Chris Blackburn Estate Agents, the event will take place on Sunday 13th July at Rushen Abbey from 12 noon until 4:30pm.

FMNH’s first event in 2006 was a huge success. Approximately 450 dancers of all ages and abilities, gathered from across the Island to enjoy the strawberries and cream teas and take a turn on the dance floor. One couple who met at a Tea Dance in the 1950’s had travelled from Ramsey for the afternoon to relive the moment.

Volunteers from The Friends of Manx National Heritage will provide a tasty strawberry and cream tea, with a variety of scrumptious homemade cakes. The dancing will be led by dance tutors, Ron and Elizabeth Sibthorpe who will also be on hand to provide expert tuition to any beginners. The dance rhythm will be provided by 50’s and 60’s dance music which is sure to evoke nostalgic memories for many.

Nicola Pemberton, Admin & Development Officer for the Friends of Manx National Heritage, said:

Tea Dancing at Rushen Abbey is part of our recent heritage, so we are really pleased to be able to put on another event this summer. The first one proved very popular so we are hoping to be able to build on that success by staging another enjoyable and memorable afternoon. We are very grateful to our sponsors and volunteers, without whose support the event would not be possible.
Chris Blackburn, Director of the new combined office in Douglas of Athertons Chartered Surveyors and Chris Blackburn Estate Agents said: “As a company with traditional values, we are delighted to sponsor the Rushen Abbey Tea Dance and hope that everyone enjoys themselves”.

Rushen Abbey is open daily from 10am to 5pm and the Strawberries and Cream Tea Dance will commence at midday on Sunday 13th July. All are welcome and the standard admission charges of £3.30 for an adult, £1.70 for a child and £8.70 for a family ticket apply.
