Charity benefits from prison sponsored walk 8 July 2008

Prison cheque presentationA SPONSORED walk from the gates of Victoria Road jail in Douglas to the new prison at Jurby has so far raised more than £700 for charity.

Isle of Man Prison Governor Alison Gomme, Deputy Governor Colin Ring and Prison Officer Mike Pacey today (Friday) presented the cheque to the Urology Fund at Noble’s Hospital.

Consultant Urologist Stephen Upsdell and Urology Nurse Specialist Marie Maguire-Kerwick accepted the donation which will help to fund efforts to combat prostate cancer. Mike Pacey tackled the 26-mile trek between the gates of the two prisons last month and was accompanied by inmates Mick Lappin and Paul Westhead as part of their rehabilitation programme.

The walk followed sections of the Millennium Way and the three men completed the distance in just under six hours. Deputy Governor Colin Ring also walked the Douglas to Jurby route at a different time in order to fit in around other work commitments.

Mike, who has organised previous fundraising events at the prison, chose to donate the proceeds of the walk to the Urology Fund at Noble’s Hospital as one of his colleagues is currently battling prostate cancer. Further donations will still be gratefully accepted and any cheques should be sent to Mike Pacey c/o Victoria Road Prison, Douglas.
