Safeguard your livestock 11 July 2008

With the heightened awareness within the countryside of bio security, Isle of Man Post Office wants to help the farming community safeguard their livestock against the spread of disease by providing a free delivery box for their mail at their farm gate.

Isle of Man Post Office supports the agricultural community’s concerns about bio security and farmers’ wishes to minimise the number of visitors to their land. Post Office vehicles visit all sorts of places on their daily delivery routes and they may inadvertently transfer contaminants to a farm. Following consultation with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and the Manx National Farmers Union, Isle of Man Post Office is offering delivery boxes to farmers in a bid to help protect their land.

Isle of Man Post Office invites all farmers to visit them at its trade stand at the Southern Agricultural Show at Great Meadow, Castletown on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th July and at the Royal Manx Agricultural Show at Staward Farm, Sulby on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th August 2008.

At the shows, farmers can view samples of the boxes and discuss their delivery needs. Any farmer interested in a free box at their farm gate will be asked to sign up for a site visit.

Malcolm MacPherson, Managing Director of Mails at Isle of Man Post Office, said:

“I have discussed the proposal with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and the Manx National Farmers Union and I anticipate the introduction of a free delivery box at the farm gate will be welcomed by farmers. I would hate to think that a Post Office vehicle was responsible for spreading a disease that could have a devastating effect on the farming community and the Isle of Man.”
He added: “We feel we have a choice of boxes to suit all and will start providing the boxes in August. We look forward to seeing as many farmers as possible at our stand at both agricultural shows.”
