Sports Writing Competition 2008 17 July 2008

The Isle of Man Arts Council is holding a writing competition this summer for young people up to the age of 18. The competition is being run in conjunction with local libraries and the National Year of Reading 2008 and uses the theme of sport to tie in with this year’s Summer Reading Challenge – Team Read.

Prizes include book tokens, sports passes with Manx Sport and Recreation and the winning entries will be published in Outlook magazine.

There are two age categories, 12 and under and 13 to 18 and two writing categories, fictional story and factual report.

All entries must be linked to sport and those writing fictional stories will be able use a paragraph written by local author and journalist John Quirk as a starting point.

Emma Gleave, Arts Development Manager said

“With such a big summer of sport ahead of us in this Olympic year, we really wanted to take the opportunity to make the most of that and to work with local libraries promoting Team Read and the National Year of Reading 2008.”

To help young writers, John Quirk will be holding writing workshops at The Henry Bloom Noble Library, 10 Victoria Street, Douglas on Saturday 9th and 16th August from 10.30-12.00pm. For more details contact the Library on 696461. Entry forms for the competition can be obtained from your local library, the Arts Council on 694598, iomartscouncil@dtl.gov.im, www.iomarts.com or forms downloaded here Factual Entry Form or Fictional Entry Form. Entries must be submitted by 17th September 2008.
