Reunion for former Victoria Road prison staff 30 July 2008

Deputy Prison Governor Colin Ring outside Victoria Road jailSTAFF who have worked at Victoria Road prison are being invited to a lunchtime reunion next week.

New Prison Governor Alison Gomme and Deputy Prison Governor Colin Ring will be hosting a buffet lunch at the Douglas facility on Thursday, August 7.

They hope as many former prison officers as possible will join current personnel at the informal get-together which is set to take place between midday and 2pm.

Mr Ring said:

'This is an opportunity for staff to renew old acquaintances and share their experiences of working at Victoria Road. It will also provide a final chance to take a look round the old jail before is closes down and prisoners are transferred to Jurby.’

Victoria Road was opened in 1891 to provide secure custody for the Island’s criminals, but is being replaced by the new facility in the north of the Island.

Any former members of staff interested in attending the event on August 7 are asked to contact Colin Ring by letter or by calling 621306 ext: 258 by Monday, August 4.

Once the transfer of prisoners has taken place, consideration will be given to opening up Victoria Road jail for public tours.
