Viking Bead Design Competition Winners Announced 1 August 2008

Manx National Heritage has selected three winners from the 150 schoolchildren who entered the Viking Bead Design Competition!

Competition WinnersThe winners are Orry Swift aged 8, Chris Corlett,10 yrs and Dean Quirk, 13 yrs. The three entered the competition to create a design for their very own Viking-style bead and their designs have now been transformed into beautiful glass beads by competition judge Julie Anne Denton whose commissioned glass reproductions can be seen in the Manx Museum as well as Tate Britain.

Julie said:

“The standard of entries was excellent and innovative, it was very difficult to choose the winners, who were chosen for their clear instructions, retention of technical terminology and fabulous yet simple designs.”

The competition invited children to design their own unique Viking style bead using inspiration from an ancient Viking Lady’s necklace which can be seen on display in the new Viking and Medieval Gallery at the Manx Museum.

The Viking necklace consists of a collection of over 50 beads, mostly made of plain glass (white, red, yellow, green, orange and blue), coloured patterned glass, and a few others made of amber and jet. Their shapes also vary - round, square, rectangular, oval, flower-shaped, melon-shaped, spiralled and grooved beads are all represented.

The winning designs were selected from three age categories, recreated in glass and presented to each of the winning children in a ceremony held at one of the Story of Mann sites, The House of Manannan in Peel, where more of our Viking history is told.
