Partnership aims to improve driving standards in Island 1 August 2008

Road safety partnershipTHE Isle of Man Constabulary has underlined its commitment to improving road safety by strengthening its partnership with the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

As part of this joint initiative, all 10 members of the Roads Policing Unit recently qualified as IAM observers and examiners. The principal aim is to improve driving standards in the Island and reduce the number of road traffic collisions.

Inspector Richard Power, officer in charge of the Roads Policing Unit, said:

‘This partnership will be influential in making the roads of the Isle of Man a lot safer.’

he RPU and its officers were assessed by Mr Stephen Mead, Assistant Chief Examiner of the Institute of Advanced Motorists. A number of different issues were discussed and Mr Mead said he was very encouraged by the commitment demonstrated by the Manx police.

He added:

‘The IAM is dedicated to the improvement of all driving standards, specifically those younger drivers in the Isle of Man who commit themselves to danger at every turn through lack of understanding and experience.’

The evaluation day has led to the Isle of Man Constabulary becoming the first force in the British Isles to have every member of its Roads Policing Unit qualified as IAM examiners. Inspector Power added:

‘The RPU is pleased to help the IAM towards improving the driving standards of its members and I would urge anybody interested in becoming a better driver to contact the IAM and see what it can offer.’
