Trip down memory lane for former prison staff 8 August 2008

Reunion at Victoria Road PrisonFORMER members of staff gathered at Victoria Road yesterday (Thursday) to reminisce about their careers at the Douglas prison.

A total of 16 people attended a lunchtime reunion hosted by Prison Governor Alison Gomme and Deputy Prison Governor Colin Ring.

The event provided an opportunity for ex-staff to take a look around the old jail before it closes down and prisoners are transferred to Jurby.

The group enjoyed a buffet lunch before reacquainting themselves with the building which was opened in 1891 to provide secure custody for the Island’s criminals.

Mrs Gomme said:

‘Victoria Road has such a rich history and it was fascinating to hear some of the stories of working life here from the 1950s through to the present day. Touring the wings, landings and cell blocks obviously brought a lot of memories flooding back.’

Mr Ring added:

‘It was a very enjoyable afternoon and great to play a part in bringing staff members together again to share their experiences of working at Victoria Road.’

Once the prison move has taken place, consideration will be given to opening up the Douglas jail for public tours.
