Historic Piers Lecture opens MNH Winter Programme 16 October 2008

Manx National Heritage will mark the beginning of its winter lecture programme with a public lecture, which will take place in the Manx Museum Lecture Theatre on Friday 31st October 2008 at 7.30pm. Doors open at 7pm and admission is free of charge. Photograph of King Edward VII landing on Queen’s Pier.

The lecture will be hosted by Manx National Heritage and the Isle of Man Victorian Society and will be presented by Professor Gavin Henderson, CBE, Principal of Trinity College of Music and Chairman of Youth Music, as well as President of the National Piers Society.

Professor Henderson, a leading authority on historic piers of the British Isles, has been a life-long campaigner for the preservation of these fascinating structures.

His passion for Victorian piers began in his hometown of Brighton, which also inspired Professor Henderson into a distinguished career in music and theatre after he accepted a position at the Palace Pier. Professor Henderson is currently a trustee of the West Pier in Brighton and is eager to survey the Isle of Man’s sea-side architecture, including the Queen’s Pier, the sixth longest sea-side pier in the British Isles.A photograph of the Queen's Pier, Ramsey, Isle of Man.

Anthea Young, Education Services Officer for Manx National Heritage said:

“Professor Henderson’s lecture is the first in a series of fascinating lectures planned for 2008 and will be followed by lectures and illustrated talks on subjects including the Himalayas, Winston Churchill and the Churchill Museum, Druids and Archibald Knox”.

For anyone wishing to find out more about the lecture programme, together with events and exhibitions at the Manx Museum or House of Manannan over the winter months, Manx National Heritage invite you to collect a free What’s On leaflet from any Manx National Heritage site.
