Nominations Closed For Tourism Awards 17 November 2008

Nominations for the Tourism Awards scheme 2008 have now closed and candidates are currently being collated by the Department of Tourism and Leisure. The Department would like to say a huge thank you to all of those who nominated and have shared their experience of quality and service and the knowledge of businesses who deserve to be recognised for going that extra mile to achieve high standards. The closing date was on the 31st October and the response has been very encouraging.

People were asked to nominate in 12 award categories, which included accommodation of the year, best town/village, taxi driver of the year, best night out, best coastal experience, best cultural experience, area of most scenic natural beauty, best railway, attraction of the year, event of the year, restaurant of the year and best customer service. Nominations were made online at www.visitisleofman.com or by completing nomination cards.

Tourism and Leisure Minister Hon Martyn Quayle MHK said:

‘Judges will be looking to reward those businesses who have put quality at the top of their agenda in their field. Hotels, B&Bs, visitor attractions, event organisers, and other related businesses have all been encouraged to enter the Tourism Awards to showcase all that the Isle of Man’s visitor economy has to offer.

‘The Awards were introduced in 2006 to fit in with the Department of Tourism and Leisure’s objective to motivate quality and service within the tourism and hospitality sectors. Quality is the key to success and the awards scheme also complements the Manx Welcome programme which offers a wide range of customer service courses.

'We are delighted to be part of the initiative to recognise the contribution of these businesses to the Island's success. It is a great pleasure to see the hard work and commitment of professionals in the industry being recognised through the Tourism Awards.'

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony to be held at the Villa Marina on Friday 30th January 2009.
