The Legacy of Sir Winston Churchill 4 December 2008

On Friday 12th December 2008, Manx National Heritage will host a free public lecture at the Manx Museum by Phil Reed, OBE on "The Churchill Museum: Creating a Personality Museum in the 21st Century.” Doors will open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

Phil Reed, OBE is the Director of the award-winning Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms, a branch of the Imperial War Museum, as well as the Executive Director of the Churchill Centre, an international body responsible for promoting the heritage and legacy of Sir Winston Churchill.

An internationally renowned Churchill scholar, Mr Reed began his career in 1975 as the Curator of Second World War German documents at the Imperial War Museum. In 1993 he was appointed the Director of the Cabinet War Rooms and soon began a tireless campaign for the development of the first national museum dedicated to Sir Winston Churchill, which he saw achieved in 2005. Set in the history rich Cabinet War Rooms, the museum offers unique insights into the life of Churchill during his ‘Finest Hour’ as well as his childhood and early political career. During his campaign Mr Reed also oversaw the restoration of the famous Churchill Suite, the nine room subterranean domestic quarters of Churchill, his wife, and their private staff. In his lecture Mr Reed will share his personal experiences of creating this spectacular museum and restoring these neglected structures for the public.

Phil Reed, OBE commented:

“Presenting the life of a great icon of modern times throws up a series of challenges, to the impartiality we have to show as a national museum, to the skill of portraying areas of the subject for which objects do not serve the purpose. The Churchill Museum was awarded the Council of Europe Museum Prize in 2006 for the way in which it responded to these challenges...and more. Just how we did that is what I will be talking about and illustrating in my lecture.”

Manx National Heritage encourages everyone to come along to what should prove to be a fascinating lecture, the third in their Winter Programme. For anyone wishing to find out more about the lecture programme, together with events and exhibitions at the Manx Museum or House of Manannan over the winter months, Manx National Heritage invite you to collect a free What’s On leaflet from any Manx National Heritage site.
