Ballafletcher Project for December Tynwald 5 December 2008

At the December sitting of Tynwald the Minister for Tourism and Leisure, Hon Martyn Quayle, MHK will be seeking approval for funding of just over £1.8million for the Ballafletcher Sports Pitch Development.

The project was originally envisaged as part of a new Millennium Park but was delayed by the original proposal to use the site for a new prison.

The new pitch development will comprise four winter pitches (on two levels) and will also accommodate a synthetic cricket wicket for summer use.

The Sports Council has allocated the new pitches to Vagabonds RUFC (2 pitches), Corinthians AFC and Douglas Royal AFC. Vagabonds is also forming a new cricket section. In order to facilitate the ongoing management of the site the Clubs have formed Ballafletcher Sports Centre Ltd.

The project, which also includes a changing block, has attracted a grant of up to £496,000 from the UK Football Foundation. Alongside the changing block Vagabonds RUFC is intending to construct a new clubhouse hat their own cost.

Commenting on the project the Minister, Hon Martyn Quayle, MHK explained:

‘The provision of new pitches in the east of the Island was identified as a top priority in the Sport and Recreation Strategy approved by Tynwald in 2002. Subject to receiving favourable consideration by Tynwald, this much needed project will not only provide valuable work for the local construction industry at this important time, but also, because of the very competitive market it offers excellent value for money.’
