Prison craft sale boosts homeless charity 5 December 2008

INMATES at Jurby prison have made a positive contribution to the Island’s new homeless shelter.

Kingswood House, operated by Manx charity Kemmyrk, officially opened its doors last month to provide overnight accommodation for those in need. The shelter on Harris Terrace, Douglas, is specifically aimed at helping homeless young men by offering them a hot meal and a bed for the night.

Prisoners have supported the organisation’s fundraising efforts by donating art and craftwork items for sale to members of the public. A total of £110 was raised which will go towards the shelter’s running costs.

Fiona Robinson, Homelessness Projects Development Officer, said:

‘Kemmyrk is most grateful to the Isle of Man Prison Service and Education Manager Judy Jackson in particular for their assistance. It is very socially responsible of the prisoners to help the Island’s homeless in this way and their efforts are sincerely appreciated.’
