Isle of Man Patients to Receive Broadened Air Transfer Service to UK 9 December 2008

The Department of Health and Social Security announces that as from Monday 12th January 2009, is to provide a dedicated air transfer service for a number of Island patients travelling to hospitals in the north west of England.

Hon Eddie Teare MHK, Minister for Health and Social Security said,

“The Department is pleased to have reached this agreement with and looks forward to working with the company. By utilising Chester Airport we are taking the opportunity to broaden the range of transport facilities available to our patients and I am sure that our patients will benefit from this new enhanced service.”

Commencing on Monday 12th January 2009, the Department will charter a twice daily return service from the Island to Chester Airport (also known as Hawarden). The service will be operated by using a 19 seater Dornier 228 aircraft. This will offer a dedicated service to the Island’s patients at times specifically arranged to suit appointments and will also help to give the Department more choice and flexibility.

Additional benefits from the service include;

• Typical flight times of 30 minutes and transit times through the UK airport of only 5-10 minutes.

• Shorter journey times to hospitals located on the Wirral and no significant increase in journey times to Liverpool Hospitals.

• Shorter check in times and faster processing at the UK airport through a dedicated facility.

The Minister added,

“This new service will operate in addition to our existing arrangements, the Department will still require scheduled flights to Liverpool, as the number of patient transfers far exceeds the number of seats which will be available to Chester. The service provided by our existing airline Flybe is much appreciated and will continue to be used. Flybe have provided a high quality service to our patients and we look forward to working with both carriers in the future.”
