Peel Power Station Fire 10 December 2008

At approximately 5pm this afternoon emergency services were called to Peel Power Station having been alerted of a fire.

The cause of the fire has already been determined as a split fuel pipe on Diesel Engine 4 which ruptured onto the engine which at the time was in full use. Consequently this caused a fire which was automatically extinguished by the deluge system at the station.

The station was evacuated with no casualties and currently fire personnel are re-entering the building in order to ensure it’s safety prior to MEA staff returning to the site.

Chief Executive, Ashton Lewis said, “I have been at the Station and am extremely pleased that the Safety procedures we have were immediately activated to ensure there were no casualties and also to alert the emergency services, who were very quick to respond to the incident. We were using the Peel engines for export to the UK at the time as well as supplying the Island’s demand and no local supplies have been affected”.
