MNH and IOM Railways launch 'Laxey Wheel Rail Explorer' 26 May 2009

On Saturday 30th May 2009, Manx National Heritage and the Isle of Man Railways will launch a new ticket incorporating travel on the Manx Electric Railway and admission to the Great Laxey Wheel, one of the Isle of Man’s most iconic sites.

The new ticket, known as the ‘Laxey Wheel Rail Explorer’ is designed to encourage both visitors and local residents to enjoy both of these unique historic Manx attractions and offers savings of over 20% on normal ticket prices. This special ticket is available on return MER travel between Douglas or Ramsey to Laxey, Douglas or Ramsey to Laxey and Snaefell Summit and Laxey to Snaefell Summit and provides admission to the Great Laxey Wheel.

Gaynor Haxby, Head of Public Services for Manx National Heritage said:

“The new ticket offers great value for money for travel on the Manx Electric Railway, upon which you can enjoy views of the spectacular Manx countryside along with a visit to the Great Laxey Wheel, a historic attraction which can’t be missed when passing through Laxey”.

The wheel itself dates back to 1854 when it was opened and officially named the Lady Isabella, in honour of the wife of the Island’s Governor, Lady Isabella Hope, whilst the Manx Electric Railway dates back to 1893 when Messrs Bruce and Saunderson were behind the construction of the railway which originally ran from Douglas to Laxey, a thriving industrial mining village at the time.

Hon Martyn Quayle MHK said:

“In 1899, the MER line was extended to Ramsey and the unique sights and sounds of the Manx Electric Railway have now been enjoyed between Ramsey, Laxey and Douglas for over 110 years. The new ticket marks this important anniversary and tickets are available from Saturday 30th May 2009 at Ramsey, Laxey and Douglas Tram Stations, in addition to the Manx Welcome Centre at the Sea Terminal in Douglas”.
